Our hearts go out to all individuals, families, businesses, and organizations that are feeling the weight of COVID-19. This pandemic has made a formidable impact and continues to overwhelm the world on both a macro and micro level. As an organization, our mission to enrich the lives of children through the power of education has only been magnified and remains our priority throughout the COVID-19 outbreak. While this time has been classified as “uncertain”, we are certain that education remains essential and requires an urgent response.

In light of the global impact of COVID-19, we have decided to run a $5 donation campaign for education response efforts as part of #GivingTuesdayNow! As stated by, “#GivingTuesdayNow is a global day of giving and unity that will take place on May 5th, 2020 as an emergency response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19”. We are eager to support and nurture education by participating in a day that strives to unite and heal communities. But why wait? Let’s start NOW!

Our focus on education is founded on the principle that, “the effects of illiteracy and poor education only serve to continue the extreme cycle of poverty and illness for millions of individuals. However, a quality education can be the great equalizer for children to rise up and improve their future”; but because of the coronavirus pandemic, education in the United States and Malawi is facing abrupt changes and challenges.

In order to slow the spread of COVID-19, schools in both the United States and Malawi have experienced sudden school closures. Due to Malawi’s remote location, it was one of the last countries to encounter the disease, but on March 23rd, all schools were closed. Stateside, the U.S.  began ordering or recommending school closures beginning March 16th. Now, many have mandated that closures last throughout the end of the school year. With such a sudden adjustment, students, teachers and parents were left with little to no time for transition – leading millions to feel overwhelmed and unprepared. Although technology has opened doors for alternative education, many states have put a pause on their typical education standards because students are not guaranteed to have stable access at home.

In an effort to meet some of the new digital learning needs of students sheltering at home, The Hamels Foundation has donated $25,000 to The Cobb School Foundation (delivering more than 500 devices to under-resourced children across Cobb County) and has assisted individual students through scholarships (two $500 scholarships to recipients at Buffalo High School and Eldon High School). However, schools provide more than just education. Supporting local food banks and supplying necessary resources to ensure the basic needs of students, teachers, and their families are being met during this time is vital in uplifting the communities we serve. $5,000 was gifted to the Hickory Hills community of Shelby County in Memphis, TN, where over 400 families have been provided food, so far, with another event currently being organized. By donating just $5, we can continue to support those who have been thoroughly impacted by COVID-19’s affect on education.
